No Surprises Act

Under the No Surprises Act, health care providers need to give clients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the expected charges for medical services, including psychotherapy services.

You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency healthcare services, including psychotherapy services.

You can ask your health care provider, and any other provider you choose, for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule a service, or at any time during treatment.

If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill. Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate.

For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, or how to dispute a bill, see your Estimate, or visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises.

Payment

Payment is expected at the time of service. I can process credit/debit cards, Health Savings Accounts, Venmo, or Paypal. I am credentialed in many insurance plans (see below) and can submit most claims electronically as a courtesy to you, but responsibility for payment rests with you, and charges will be billed to you in the case of a denial of coverage or unmet deductible and copay amounts. I encourage you to be informed about your coverage and to discuss any questions or concerns you have at any time.

If your insurance is provided by a company other than those listed above, your policy may still cover out-of-network services. Your employer's website or Human Resources Department can help you answer these questions:

  • Do I have mental health insurance benefits?

  • Does my policy cover out-of-network counselors? At what rate?

  • What is my deductible, and has it been met?

  • How many sessions per year does my health insurance cover?

  • What is the coverage amount per therapy session?

  • How do I obtain a list of network providers?

  • Do I need to have authorization before I receive services?

  • How do I submit a claim for reimbursement?
